Working Holiday Visas for Canadians Going to Japan

To be eligible you must:

  • be aged between 18 and 30 at the time of application
  • be a Canadian citizen
  • be resident in Canada at the time of application
  • not have previously participated in this Working Holiday Program
  • intend to primarily holiday in Japan
  • meet health and character requirements

Visa Fee

No fee. Woohoo!

Proof of Funds

You must possess a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase a return ticket as well as a minimum of CDN$2,500.


No known quota.


Visa is issued for an initial stay of 6 months that may be extended another 6 months.

Employment Restrictions

May not be employed as receptionist, dancer, singer, musician, acrobat etc. at places of entertainment which might endanger "good morals and manners".


The visa is single entry. If you wish to leave Japan and return you must obtain a re-entry permit from the Immigration Bureau.

How to Apply

Applications must be made in person at the Embassy or the closest consular office (see information below) and must show up with all of the following documents:

  • Valid Canadian passport
  • Completed application form
  • Photos (passport size, approx. 45mm x 45mm)
  • Personal history/resume/curriculum vitae
  • Detailed itinerary of stay in Japan proposed by applicant
  • Letter explaining your reasons for a Working-Holiday visa
  • Note from physician stating that you are in good health (proof of a recent medical examiniation)
  • Actual return airline ticket
  • Minimum CDN$2,500 in Travellers Cheques ($3,500 for married couple)

General Comments

All foreigners who intend on staying in Japan for longer than 90 days must apply for an alien registration card within their first 90 days. The application can be made at a local municipal office (city hall) and must be carried with you at all times.
